AB OBJECTIVES: (1) To arouse housewives' awareness of AIDS; (2) To mobilize
housewives to start AIDS education in their own families. METHODS: A
workshop was organised for working class housewives. The theme of Love
Yourself--Be Concern for Your Family was used in the appeal for their
participation. Talks on the topics of Women's Health and AIDS, Women's
Role in the Battle Against AIDS, and How to Start AIDS Education in the
Family were given by various specialists. A Question and Answer session
was arranged after the workshop. RESULTS: A total of 90 housewives
attended the workshop. According to the questionnaires returned (n =
34), all the audience regarded the content of the workshop as helpful or
very helpful. 97% viewed the educational materials useful or very
useful. A significant number (92%, 75%) had never talked to their
husbands or children about AIDS. After the workshop all indicated that
they would talk to their family members. Moreover 87% showed interest in
receiving more information of AIDS and participating other educational
activities. CONCLUSION: Working class housewives have little chance to
receive AIDS information and thus only a few talk with family members
about AIDS. A simple workshop giving basic facts about AIDS and the
skills required to discuss this with their family members can produce a
very beneficial result.
